- the cross, literally ugly as sin. but there could be nothing more beautiful as that instrument of torture and death where my Savior died for me
- the approaching thunderstorm
- the remaining three zinnias in a vase on my kitchen counter, with brown edges and fading petals but clinging to summer's joy
